At the High Court in Edinburgh Lord Doherty sentenced Ronald Atkin to 6 years imprisonment after he pled guilty to being concerned in the supplying of a Class A drug in Dundee and elsewhere on 13 August 2013.

On sentencing Lord Doherty made the following statement in court:

26 November 2013

“Ronald Atkin, you have pled guilty to being concerned in the supplying of diamorphine, a class A drug. The drugs involved had a maximum potential street value of £100,000. You were transporting those drugs by car to Dundee at the time the crime was detected.

You have a bad record for drugs offences. This is the fourth occasion on which you have been convicted of being concerned in the supplying of drugs. Your three previous convictions have all been at High Court level. In 1995 you were sentenced to 5 years imprisonment. In 2006 you were sentenced to 5 years imprisonment. In 2009 you were sentenced to 40 months imprisonment. The first two of those convictions involved class A drugs, the third involved class B drugs. You were still on licence in respect of that offence when you committed the current offence.

I give you credit for pleading guilty by s. 76 letter. Had you not done so the sentence I would have imposed would have been 8 years imprisonment. In view of your plea the sentence which I impose is 6 years imprisonment.

The unexpired portion of your previous sentence was 110 days. Had it not been for the fact that you have been on remand since 14 August of this year I would have ordered your return to prison to serve that unexpired portion before you serve the sentence for the current offence. In view of the period you have spent on remand I will not make such an order, but I will not backdate the sentence which I impose today. The sentence will, accordingly, run from today’s date.”
