Welcome to the website of the judiciary in Scotland.  You will find lots of information about judges, the work they do in each of the different courts and some helpful advice if you are attending court or simply want to come in and see what happens.  

You can also find up-to-date information on the latest sentencing statements which will allow you to read what a judge has said in court on passing sentence.  We also publish summaries of opinions, fatal accident inquiry determinations and other major court decisions in Scotland.

In cases where there is public interest or where the sentence may be complicated or controversial, the judge may decide to make the sentencing statement more widely available. You can read the judge’s full statement here once sentence has been passed.

We also issue tweets to alert our followers as soon as statements are published. Follow Us.

Sentencing Statement

At the High Court in Edinburgh today, 22 February 2019, Lord Armstrong sentenced Fernando Carrasco Dos Santos to nine years’ imprisonment for the attempted murder of Rikki Millar, and sentenced Ruben Goncal Ves Semedo Correia to six years and nine months’ imprisonment for assaulting the complainer with a knife to his severe injury, permanent disfigurement, permanent impairment, and to the danger of his life.

Thomas Sheridan v News Group Newspapers Limited

Court Opinion

Thomas Sheridan is entitled to interest on the £200,000 damages he was awarded following his successful defamation action against the publishers of the News of the World, at the judicial rate of 8% per year from the date of the jury’s verdict in 2006 until the principal sum was paid in 2017.
