In cases where there is public interest or where the sentence may be complicated or controversial, the judge may decide to make the sentencing statement more widely available. You can read the judge’s full statement here once sentence has been passed.

HMA v Colin McKay

Sentencing Statements

At the High Court in Edinburgh Lady Wolffe imposed an extended sentence of 10 years on Colin McKay after he was found guilty of a number of rapes and indecent assault. The sentence is composed of a custodial period of 8 years followed by an extended period on supervision of 2 years .

PF v Gayle Hunter and Elsie Hunter

At Jedburgh Sheriff Court on 29 June 2015, Sheriff Kevin Drummond QC sentenced Gayle Hunter to two months imprisonment and imposed a Community Payback Order on her mother Elsie Hunter after the two accused made false allegations of domestic abuse.

At the High Court in Livingston on 5 June 2015, Lady Wolffe imposed an extended sentence of seven-and-a-half years’ imprisonment on Vincent Spears after the accused was convicted of rape – a custodial term of five-and-a-half years followed by an extension period of two years on licence.
