In cases where there is public interest or where the sentence may be complicated or controversial, the judge may decide to make the sentencing statement more widely available. You can read the judge’s full statement here once sentence has been passed.

HMA v Kristopher Reynolds and Martin Argyelan

At the High Court in Glasgow today, 29 July 2019, Lord Matthews sentenced Kristopher Reynolds and Martin Argyelan to extended sentences of 10 years and 12-and-a-half years respectively, after the two accused were found guilty of the culpable homicide of James Thomson. Reynolds’ sentence consists of a custodial element of seven years and an extension period of three years on licence, while Argyelan’s sentence comprises a custodial term of nine years and six months, with six months attributable to a bail aggravation, and an extension period of three years on licence.

HMA v Matthew Brown King Bell

At the High Court in Glasgow today, 25 July 2019, Lord Arthurson sentenced Matthew Bell to an extended sentence of 15 years’ duration, after the accused pled guilty to conspiring with others to commit the rape of a woman and sexual assault of children in the Philippines while viewing a livestream of the offences in his own home. The custodial part will be nine years, which will be followed by an extension period of six years on licence.

At the High Court in Edinburgh today, 19 July 2019, Lord Boyd of Duncansby sentenced William Young to three years and nine months’ imprisonment after the accused pled guilty to assault, dangerous driving, threatening violence, and extortion.

At the High Court in Glasgow today, 17 July 2019, Lord Matthews sentenced Edward Cairney and Avril Jones to life imprisonment with a punishment part of 14 years after the two accused were found guilty of the murder of Margaret Fleming and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

At the High Court in Edinburgh today, 16 July 2019, Lord Armstrong sentenced Alan Kusz to 10 years’ imprisonment after the accused was found guilty of sexually assaulting a one-year-old girl to her severe injury and permanent impairment.
