The governing body of the Judicial Institute, known as the Advisory Council, meets quarterly and the Chairman, Director and Deputy-Director report on their work at every meeting. The governing body also meets to approve Annual Reports, Business Plans and other similar strategic documents.

At the High Court in Edinburgh today, 3 August 2018, Lady Scott imposed a Community Payback Order with an offender supervision requirement of two-and-a-half years upon a 15-year-old boy who pled guilty to the culpable homicide of Jack Wilson, having decided that there were a number of factors which rendered the circumstances of the case “exceptional”.

HMA v James Cook, Peter Brown and Jamie Cook

Sentencing Statements

At the High Court in Glasgow today, 30 July 2018, Lord Matthews sentenced James Cook, Peter Brown and Jamie Cook to life imprisonment after the three accused were found guilty of the murder of Jason McCue. James Cook was given a punishment part of 16 years and four months, Peter Brown was given a punishment part of 18 years, and Jamie Cook was given a punishment part of 17 years and three months.

HMA v Reece Ford

Sentencing Statements

At the High Court in Edinburgh today, 19 July 2018, Lord Pentland imposed an extended sentence of 13 years on Reece Ford after the accused pled guilty to the repeated rape of two children. The custodial term will 10 years, which will be followed by an extension period of three years on licence.

At the High Court in Edinburgh today, 18 July 2018, Temporary Judge Craig A L Scott QC found that the accused Alan McDonald raped and indecently assaulted two children following an examination of facts, and made no order in terms of section 57(2)(e) of the Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act 1995.
