Richard was appointed a Part-Time Sheriff in July 2005.  A graduate of the University of Edinburgh he qualified in 1973 and joined the Court department of Maclay Murray & Spens in Glasgow.  Following a year in the Maritime Department of Richards Butler, solicitors in London, he became a partner in Maclay Murray & Spens in 1977 where he remained until retiring in 2007.  In January 1999 Richard was admitted as a Solicitor Advocate (Civil).  Whilst in practice as a commercial litigation solicitor his specialist areas of practice included maritime, aviation, judicial review and civil fraud and money laundering and a number of cases with a significant international element.

People attend court for many reasons. They may be directly involved in the case such as the lawyers, accused, witnesses, jurors or police officers or as members of the public they may wish to attend and observe proceedings. All courts are open to the public except in certain circumstances.
