The Hon Lord McGhie

Lord McGhie has been Chairman of the Scottish Land Court and President of the Lands Tribunal for Scotland and since 1996.

Lord McGhie was educated at Perth Academy and graduated from Edinburgh University. He was called to the Bar in 1969 after a full solicitor’s apprenticeship with Balfour and Manson in Edinburgh. He took silk in 1983.  He had a wide practice covering most aspects of civil and criminal law.  He served as advocate-depute from 1983 to 1986.  He then became a member of the Medical Appeals Tribunal and later of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.  He was counsel to the Department of Energy in the Piper Alpha enquiry and to Scottish Development Department in the M8 extension enquiry. He has been Chairman of the Scottish Land Court and President of the Lands Tribunal for Scotland and since 1996.
