Office of Sheriff vacancies (Fort William and Oban)

The Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland invites applications from suitably qualified individuals who wish to be considered for appointment to the office of Sheriff.

The Board has been advised by the Judicial Office for Scotland that there are two existing resident Sheriff vacancies.

One full-time post based in Fort William Sheriff Court, Grampian, Highlands and Island Sheriffdom, and one salaried part-time vacancy, for applicants who wish to work 70% of a full-time equivalent post, based in Oban Sheriff Court, North Strathclyde Sheriffdom.

The Guidance Note for Applicants, within the application pack, provides more detailed information on the posts available.

The Office of Sheriff Role Profile document provides applicants with information about the role.

Before applying applicants should be aware that the Lord President expects a sheriff appointed to a resident vacancy to complete a five-year minimum period before seeking a transfer to another post. The Lord President has informed the Board that it is his expectation that a person appointed to these vacancies must ensure that they reside within a one-hour journey of their base court. If the recommended applicant’s require to move home to meet this requirement, it would be at the applicants own cost.

Selection is made solely on merit. The Board encourages and welcomes applications from the widest possible range of eligible individuals. The Board would particularly welcome applications from under-represented groups.

Completed online applications should be submitted no later than midday on Wednesday 16 November 2016. On present plans, interviews will take place on Thursday 19th and Friday 20th January 2017 in Edinburgh.
